The Impact of Wars on Tarrant County's Development: An Expert's Perspective

Fort Worth has been the county seat of Tarrant County since the 1850s, when many colonists had already made their way there. The data in Figure 6 indicates that neither Kanawha County (discontinuous line) nor the other counties that received wartime investments (solid line) experienced a greater rate of growth after World War II than those that did not receive any investments. This conclusion is further strengthened by the inclusion of the fixed effects of the county, the fixed effects of the state year, and the control variables of the county from before the war. The Great Depression had a major impact on Tarrant County, but it wasn't until late 1932 that its full effect was felt. Trail drivers needed supplies and entertainment, and Tarrant County was more than willing to provide them.

The figures follow the results of the post-war manufacturing industry in these counties and compare its performance with that of other counties in the same state. Finally, when Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport was completed in the 1970s, Tarrant County was connected to the rest of the world. All columns include the fixed effects of the county, the fixed effects of the state year, and the characteristics of pre-war counties that interacted with the effects of the year. The Texas Congress encouraged this agreement by offering large grants to companies such as Peters Land Company, which eventually obtained the land that would become Tarrant County. According to the panels in Figure 7, Cobb County (broken line) and other counties with some wartime investment (solid line) show divergences, suggesting that this plant contributed to Cobb County's growth in manufacturing in the postwar period.

Each regression includes fixed effects of county and state year, as well as controls on characteristics of pre-war counties (interacting with fixed effects of year).To be clear, this assumption identifies an equation (which states that, in absence of new investment during World War II, relative changes in southern counties would have been same for counties that received different amounts of investment in World War II). Little is known about Indians who inhabited area of present-day Tarrant County before arrival of European explorers in 16th century. The panels in Figure 6 compare manufacturing activity in Kanawha County (West Virginia) and rest of counties in state that received investments with counties that did not receive any investment. Tarrant County voters favored Democratic candidate in virtually every presidential election from 1892 to 1948; only exception occurred in 1928, when Republican Herbert Hoover took over county. In 1845, one group from Missouri settled south of current northern border of Tarrant County, and another group founded Birdville on banks of Big Fossil Creek.

Tarrant County consists of 898 square miles of gently sloping terrain with elevations ranging from 420 feet in southeast to 960 feet in northwest. The impact wars have had on Tarrant County's development is undeniable. The Great Depression had a major effect on its economy and it wasn't until late 1932 that its full impact was felt.
